2. Useful Expression

A. I’m broke. = I don’t have any money.
B. Could you sopt me $10 until the weekend? = Could you let me borrow some cash until Friday?
     *spot 돈을 빌려주다, 도움을 주다
C. I can’t afford that on my salary! = I don’t make enough money to buy this!
D. Did you see his new car? He must be loaded! = He must be rich because he bought an expensive car.

 

 

3. Key Conversation 

-I don’t get it. = I don’t understand.
-But we’re not going for another month. 
  *not + another 기간 > 기간동안 하지 않는다

   eg. My birthday is not for another month. 내 생일은 한 달 뒤에나 오는데.
-I don’t think putting everything on our credit card is the best idea.

1) Budget planning

-I think $150 should cover our transportation expenses for the month.
 *transportation expenses 교통비
-We have to budget $350 for groceries. 
-We need to set aside $900 for rent.

-I’m sorry, but you have insufficient funds in your bank account.
-Is he having trouble making ends meet?
 *make ends meet 수지를 맞추다
-How can we afford this on our tight budget? 타이트한 예산으로 이걸 어떻게 살 수 있어?

-Our income should be able to cover the cost.

-This isn’t a normal monthly expense.

 -I have never really splashed out on anything.

2) Run out of money 다 쓰다, 고갈되다
-We ran out of money and had to come home early.
-Come on! We are running out of time!

 

6. Slang & Idioms

1) An arm and a leg ; a lot of money 
 -Wow! That store is charging an arm and a leg for that dress.

2) Scrimp and save ; to spend as little money as possible in order to save
-We had to scrimp and save to afford our new car, but it was worth it.

3) Break even ; for income to equal expenses
-If we make just a few more sales, we should be able to break even on our investment.

4) Ballpark figure ; an estimate
-Just give me a ballpark figure for the total cost.

5) Shoestring budget ; a very meager budget
-When I was a student, I had to live on a shoestring budget.
